Local Businesses and High Schools Team up for Sizzling Chili Bowl Throwdown

Ten teams will compete for the title of ultimate chili champion at the fourth annual Sizzling Chili Bowl Throwdown on Saturday, November 5 from noon to 3:00 pm at the Grand Meridian in Appleton.

High School students will be paired up with local businesses where they will work together to create the ultimate chili concoction. The high school students are currently enrolled in family and consumer science courses at their schools. Many participate in the ProStart® program, focused on developing the culinary and management skills needed for a career in the restaurant and hospitality industry.

This is a public event where attendees can taste and vote for their favorite chili. Tickets include unlimited chili samples and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or on the day of the event. To purchase tickets online, visit wirestaurant.org (click on “Chili Bowl Throwdown”). All proceeds benefit the Wisconsin ProStart® program.

The following teams will be competing in the Sizzling Chili Bowl Throwdown:

  • Fond du Lac High School with Schreiner’s (2 teams)
  • Neenah High School with Zuppa’s and Tim’s Full Belli Deli
  • Northland Pines High School with Friendship House
  • Pulaski High School with S.A.L.T.
  • Preble High School
  • Rhinelander High School with CT’s Deli
  • Washington Park High School with Rooster’s

The ProStart® program, administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and state restaurant associations, is a two-year curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.  When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies and participate in at least 400 hours of a mentored work experience, they are awarded the ProStart® National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.

Wisconsin was one of the first states in the county to pilot and implement a ProStart® program and currently has 5,000 students participating in the program at 110 schools throughout the state.
