Kayla Correll from Greendale High School Honored as 2016 Wisconsin ProStart Teacher of the Year

(Madison, WI) The Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation announced today that Kayla Correll, Family and Consumer Education Teacher at Greendale High School, is the Wisconsin 2016 ProStart® Teacher of the Year.  The award recognizes an exceptional educator in Wisconsin who utilizes the ProStart program in his or her classroom.

The ProStart program, administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and state restaurant associations, is a two-year curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.  Students also have the opportunity to participate in paid jobs where industry managers mentor them.  When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and participate in at least 400 hours of a mentored work experience, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.

Ms. Correll personally established the ProStart program at Greendale High School, spearheading its implementation and quickly making her school one of the top ProStart programs in the state. Where she truly shines is as an advocate for this program and for her students.

Her reach goes well beyond her classroom with involvement in the community of Family and Consumer Educators throughout our state and nationwide. She has served her profession well by sharing best practices with other educators. She has offered help and materials to fellow Family and Consumer Science teachers that allow them to teach ProStart effectively and offer life-changing opportunities for their students.

She also served as the Vice President of Communications and Technology for the Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Educators

Ms. Correll’s ProStart culinary and management teams have consistently placed in the top ten at the Wisconsin State ProStart Invitational, proving her commitment to her students and excellence in family and consumer science education. She has had students earn the ProStart Certificate of Achievement and the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Certification, helping them go on to post-secondary work and careers in the restaurant industry.

“She is truly an outstanding teacher and her contributions to education, extracurricular programming, and foundation work all show an unmatched passion for the industry and make her very well-deserving of this award,” said Alex Newman, ProStart Coordinator for the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation.

As Wisconsin’s ProStart Teacher of the Year, Correll may also be nominated to be a finalist for national awards given by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF).

With national and local support from industry members, educators, the NRAEF and state restaurant associations, ProStart reaches 95,000 students nationwide. The ProStart program in Wisconsin reaches 4,000 students. For more information on the ProStart program, visit www.nraef.org.
